Challenges

The last few years have seen increased pressures in the education sector, with underfunding now topping the list of challenges. Staff costs have grown to over 85% of budget, reducing discretionary spending to near zero for most schools. According to the NAHT, 90% of schools expect to operate in deficit this year.

There are only so many ways that the continuing squeeze can be addressed. Class sizes inevitably increase, despite the UK already having the largest primary class size in Europe. There is also a significant desire to save staff time in lesson preparation and in marking.

How can technology help?

A Morgan Stanley survey shows the best educational outcomes result from using technology extensively, or not at all. The worst outcomes come from sporadic use, where staff and students spend more time wrestling with technology than they do getting value from it.

Schools are often tempted to buy IT equipment outright, thanks to various capital grants that come and go. But this creates a requirement for operational support for which there is no subsequent budget, leading to unsupported, unmaintained and eventually unused equipment. The smart answer is a consumption-based, scalable model with built-in support, upgrade and replacement.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gradually becoming more widely used across all areas of our lives and will have a role to play in lesson planning, scheduling and marking.
