A Brief Introduction

Clarity Informatics is an internationally renowned centre of excellence in evidence-based health informatics.

Its team of clinicians, researchers and software specialists create evidence-based systems, tools and solutions that make best use of resources and lead to radical improvements in clinical safety and quality, and in patient experiences and outcomes. Its clients include individual GPs, Primary Care Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities, and health sector bodies and professionals across the UK and in the Middle East.

The Challenge

To support Clarity’s multi-faceted business, ITPS created a 10G ring network sitting across two secure data centres. This high capacity communications hub – the fastest in the North East region – gives Clarity rapid and large bandwidth connectivity to its clients across the UK and in the Middle East.

As part of the solution ITPS worked with several Strategic Health Authorities around the UK to develop an N3 connection – essential for companies dealing with the NHS. This serves as a three-way high security link between Clarity, its clients and partners; and the two ITPS data centres that together form the backbone of its operations.

ITPS Approach

Transforming racks of servers into a new virtualised server environment has seen server numbers reduced to three physical machines, but giving instant upward scalability when extra computing power is needed.

This has saved Clarity a large amount of physical rack space, the associated capital and maintenance costs, plus the cost of the energy needed for heating and cooling. A unified communications system gives Clarity’s people instant access to integrated voice, images, and data streams all converged on a shared, IP-based infrastructure that slashes the running costs of a traditional phone system.

DEEPER INSIGHT

The whole infrastructure has built in resilience and is surrounded by a Barracuda firewall, with 24/7 continuous monitoring and support meeting a recovery time objective of under one hour, and minimising the threat of any down time.

ITPS created the solution using elements from its Symmetri brand. This set of ‘best of breed’ products and services from trusted vendors fits together in a solution that mirrors a client’s infrastructure, from operating system and applications, to processes and data. In the event of interruption, damage or loss the entire physical and virtual system is restored, either on the client’s premises or at ITPS’s disaster recovery site, from where the client can continue to run their business.

The ITPS Difference

Experts from ITPS worked alongside us to understand our business objectives, so we started to see the financial and operational benefits of the new infrastructure from day one,“ says Professor Ian Purves, Director and Founder of Clarity Informatics.

“We lead the market in the collection, analysis and delivery of evidence-based health data by constantly developing new products and service lines, and technology plays a key part in that. For instance we’re the only people in our market to develop an app-based model to give clients an easy, highly secure way of buying into our services whether they are using a desktop or mobile device.

“One of the benefits of the new infrastructure is that it offers us a rapid development platform and test environment. Our development team can have a new server set up and running in under 10 minutes, saving us a lot of time and effort and allowing us to act quickly to maintain and grow our market share.

“ITPS has helped us to create a physically smaller, but much more powerful and agile platform that delivers better value at lower cost.”
